چکیده

This note describes a simple scheme for analytical estimation of the surface-layer similarity functions from state variables. What distinguishes this note from the many previous papers on this topic is that this method is specifically targeted for numerical models in which simplicity and economic execution are critical. In addition, it has been in use in a mesoscale meteorological model for several years. For stable conditions, a very simple scheme is presented that compares well to the iterative solution. The stable scheme includes a very stable regime in which the slope of the stability functions is reduced to permit significant fluxes to occur, which is particularly important for numerical models in which decoupling from the surface can be an important problem. For unstable conditions, simple schemes generalized for varying ratios of aerodynamic roughness to thermal roughness (z0/z0h) are less satisfactory. Therefore, a simple scheme has been empirically derived for a fixed z0/z0h ratio, which represents quasi-laminar sublayer resistance.

Calculation of Surface Fluxes under Convective Conditions by Turbulence Closure Models

A method of deriving new relationships between near-surface turbulent fluxes and vertical differences of wind speed and potential temperature between two levels in the atmospheric surface layer from simplified second-order turbulence closure models is presented. The paper aims at a coherent treatment of fair-weather conditions and the asymptotic free convection limit. The traditionally used rep...

Scalar flux profile relationships over the open ocean

[1] The most commonly used flux-profile relationships are based on Monin-Obukhov (MO) similarity theory. These flux-profile relationships are required in indirect methods such as the bulk aerodynamic, profile, and inertial dissipation methods to estimate the fluxes over the ocean. These relationships are almost exclusively derived from previous field experiments conducted over land. However, th...

Mechanisms Involved in Osmotic Backwashing of Fouled Forward Osmosis (FO) Membranes

Organic matter leads to one of the biggest problems in membranes: fouling. Developing efficient cleaning processes is therefore crucial. This study systematically examines how alginic acid fouling formed under different physical and chemical conditions affect osmotic backwashing cleaning efficiency in forward osmosis (FO). The fouling layer thickness before and after osmotic backwashing was mea...

A NOTE ON THE FLUX-VARIANCE SIMILARITY RELATIONSHIPS FOR HEAT AND WATER VAPOUR IN THE UNSTABLE ATMOSPHERIC SURFACE LAYER Research Note

Atmospheric surface layer (ASL) experiments over the past 10 years demonstrate that the flux-variance similarity functions for water vapour are consistently larger in magnitude than their temperature counterpart. In addition, latent heat flux calculations using the flux-variance method do not compare as favorably to eddy-correlation measurements when compared to their sensible heat counterpart....
